Phone company giveth, customers taketh.

Australian telecommunications company Telstra made good on a promise on Sunday, giving mobile customers a day of free data as part of an apology for the outages experienced on mobile and Internet services nationwide last Tuesday.

Telstra said on its support page that it would not place restrictions on the amount of data a user could take advantage of on Sunday. Australians took this as meaning they should download everything in sight

The company announced Monday that customers didn’t hold back when it came to downloads on Telstra’s cellular network, amassing a total of 1,841 terabytes of data during the free-for-all extravaganza. It’s equivalent to 5.1 million episodes of Game Of Thrones, or 23 million downloaded copies of Kanye West’s new The Life Of Pablo album, Telstra said in a statement. Read more…

A seemingly playful Twitter rant from Kanye West on Sunday that vaguely suggested that he wanted $1 billion from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg turned out to be the truth

Hours after posting the original message proposing the billion-dollar investment, Kanye followed up with a new, more earnest plea

“Mark Zuckerberg I know it’s your birthday but can you please call me by tomorrow,” the multiple tweet message begins. “You love hip-hop, you love my art… I am your favorite artist but you watch me barely breathe and still play my album in your house.” Read more…

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

Jake Epping hears these words over and over again throughout the nearly 90-minute premiere episode of the new time-travel thriller 11.22.63 — and after a while, it starts to feel like the statement is meant for more than just the hero at the heart of the show.

On several levels, 11.22.63 feels like an unlikely beast. It’s based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, adapted by J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company, starring the debatably too-prolific James Franco, and released on … Hulu? It’s an A-list roster of talent and an intriguing choice of venue, but not exactly a selection of ingredients one would expect to see in the same cauldron. Read more…

Salloura

ISTANBUL—The Salloura chain sweets shop was a Syrian institution, famous throughout the region for its fluffy cakes, pistachio baklava and rose-water syrup-soaked, fried dough balls.

Today the Salloura family manages the bakery out of a bustling avenue in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district, where traditional eateries have sprouted up in order to offer cheap, filling and nostalgia-inducing food for the more than 300,000 Syrian refugees who have made this city their home in exile.

“These foods help people to feel connected with their homeland, who in Turkey feel lost,” said Mohammad Ayman as he wraps clotted cream filled pastries into to-go packages for Syrian customers. Read more…

The sparse expanse of South Dakota are a long way away from the coastal shores of Australia, but a letter is forging a mysterious connection between the two.

Reddit user rhymnocerous claims to have found this letter in an abandoned house located in the midwestern U.S. state. Posted online on Saturday, he claims it was written in the mid-1980s by a boy named Eric from Slacks Creek, a suburb of Brisbane.

“Hi! Once again,” the letter, addressed to Mary, reads. “The reason I’ve written a second letter is because I’d forgotten to tell you how I became a born again Christian,” Eric continued, that being one of those things you might forget to mention when you dot pen to paper. Read more…

You already know it’s Valentine’s Day and, if you’re lucky, you got to spend it with your true love. But you might not realize that it’s also the birthday of one very special woman, er, replicant – Pris, from Blade Runner!

Image: screenshot from ‘blade runner’ 1982

In the 1982 film, each replicant (or android) had an “incept” or birth date (see trailer above). In the case of Pris, played by Daryl Hannah, that incept date was February 14th, 2016

Each replicant only had a few years to live, so those dates were important in the film. But even more important is the fact that we have finally reached Pris’ incept date and we still don’t have flying cars or realistic female ninja robots. Read more…

A Philadelphia-area business that burned on Saturday morning is now an ice castle after brutally cold temperatures froze the water used to battle the blaze

Joe’s Auto Body in Frankford caught fire around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, growing into a six-alarm fire that spread to half the block due to high winds. Besides the gusts, the extremely cold temps — from the upper teens to the low 20s — made fighting the fire a challenge for first responders. Three people, including a firefighter, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries Read more…

Kanye West does a lot of bragging — about his music, his fashion line and even his wife

But the artist took an oddly humble turn earlier this week by asking for a massive dose of financial help from none other than Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg

The plea of monetary aid came, of course, via Twitter, where Kanye wrote, “Mark Zuckerberg invest 1 billion dollars into Kanye West ideas … after realizing he is the greatest living artist and greatest artist of all time.”

Was Kanye making a prediction or a request? It’s hard to know for sure, but it’s not difficult to interpret it as a veiled request for funding considering it came just a day after Kanye claimed to have “53 million dollars in personal debt.” Read more…
