CHROMAT Projects NYFW into Your Home with VR & 3D Scanning

CHROMAT Projects NYFW into Your Home with VR & 3D Scanning

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Last year, we covered exciting work by tech-fashion studio CHROMAT, which featured some really cutting edge and great looking designs. The looks from that night not only featured 3D printing, but responsive apparel that relied on Intel technology. And all of the looks were captured as 3D scans by Intel RealSense and published to Sketchfab.  For CHROMAT’s Fall/Winter ’16 show, the runway show had its own 21st century appeal, this time because the looks were not just captured using the all new version of RealSense from Intel, but also because the show was live-streamed in VR.…

Nintendo Classic ‘Duck Hunt’ Rebooted in VR

Nintendo Classic ‘Duck Hunt’ Rebooted in VR

By Tyler Koslow

One of the most iconic and popular video games of all time, Nintendo’s 1984 NES title Duck Hunt, might be a bit outdated, but who is to say that the classics can’t be reborn with a little help from emerging 3D technology? After attending this year’s Global Game Jam event, one 21-year-old developer from New Jersey named Joesph Delgado became inspired to take Duck Hunt, now over 30-years-old by the way, and reformat it for Virtual Reality.

I’m sure there were a lot of elements of both VR and Duck Hunt for Delgado to consider, implementing the classic Nintendo gun controller, tracking hand motions and ducks, and just making the VR experience as enjoyable as possible, for instance.…

Nintendo Drops VR Hints in Earnings Call

Nintendo Drops VR Hints in Earnings Call

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Playing Mario Maker on my friends’ Wii U, we can’t help but talk about how awesome Nintendo is when it comes to innovative gameplay.  They’ve been ahead of the curve every step of the way. Even if their Power Glove and Super Scope were never quite as functional as one would hope and the augmented reality aspect of the Wii U isn’t quite as appreciated as it should be, every new Nintendo system at least attempts to reinvent the way we think of gaming. …

There’s no longer any doubt that virtual reality is the next big interactive platform, and now it looks like you can add Google to the list of companies clamoring to stake an early claim

That’s the indication some are drawing from a few recent Google job postings that appear to be focused on developing VR hardware

Of course, some of the job postings listed, which were highlighted this weekend by Road to VR, involve Google Cardboard, the low-cost VR device that a number of companies are using to gain an early toehold in the burgeoning VR space. Read more…

Google to Tackle Mixed Reality with New VR Department

Google to Tackle Mixed Reality with New VR Department

By Michael Molitch-Hou

This week, Google announced that it would be opening a new division dedicated to virtual reality computing, which will see the tech giant’s former VP for product management, Clay Bavor, move from overseeing Google’s apps to becoming the VP of Virtual Reality.  The move has many commentators stating that Google has been behind on VR and is attempting to catch up Microsoft, who will be shipping out the Hololens this quarter, and Facebook, shipping the Oculus Rift with a $599 price tag. …

Adobe Fuse Makes 3D Modeling Complex Characters Simple

Adobe Fuse Makes 3D Modeling Complex Characters Simple

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Adobe has slowly been plugging away at the 3D front to make their brand of easy and powerful tools extend their reach into 3D modeling and 3D printing.  This has previously included small additions to Photoshop CC for prepping 3D models for 3D printing, either through 3D printing service bureaus or local 3D printers.  Last year, however, the company really made big moves into the space through the acquisition of 3D software specialists Mixamo.  And, now, through Adobe Fuse, anyone with computer and internet access can create their own 3D characters for 3D animation. …

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

By Davide Sher

The CARAPACE PROJECT brand is a way for MHOX design studio (Alessandro Zomparelli and Filippo Nassetti) to use their generative software and SLS 3D printing technology to explore new types of products. These range from immediately useful items, such as jewelry and iPhone cases (like the one I have), and conceptual products such as their masks and ear covers, imagined as a “carapax” or external skeleton that protects eyes and ears from over-stimulation.

Perhaps inspired by the many announcements and upcoming releases of VR headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, their latest project they combine both their practical and conceptual approaches by creating a VR mask that is both an exoskeletal shield and a hold for a VR headset.…

Ultrahaptics Adds Tactile Sensations to Virtual 3D

Ultrahaptics Adds Tactile Sensations to Virtual 3D

By Davide Sher

Oculus’ Rift will let you wander through amazing, immersive, virtual 3D worlds. Google’s Project Tango will help you create a virtual 3D version of your real world. Their limit? Neither of them will ever give you any indication as to the material qualities of the digital objects you interact with. This is where Ultrahaptics comes in, with its Tactile Sensation Haptic Kit.
By the way, in case you were wondering, but never looked it up, “haptic” means any form of communication involving touch.…

Google & Lenovo Unveil Project Tango Smartphone at CES 2016

Google & Lenovo Unveil Project Tango Smartphone at CES 2016

By Michael Molitch-Hou

If successful, Google’s Project Tango has the power to change just about everything. By putting a 3D camera into tablets and smartphones, ordinary consumers could, potentially, capture their daily world in 3D, sharing 3D selfies on dating sites and posting scans of their newborns on Facebook, all using a device that they would be carrying around anyway. And, after showing off a prototype of the Project Tango smartphone with Intel’s RealSense built-in, Google and Lenovo have teased that they will unveiling something big on Thursday.…
