Since the dieselgate scandal broke in September, Volkswagen executives and representatives have appeared publicly shocked and genuinely dismayed with the revelation that the then-largest global automaker had cheated emissions regulations with over 11 million diesel-powered models worldwide. Turns out, however, it might have been an open secret all along.

According to Reuters, Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported that — according to documents from VW’s internal investigation — that software designed to cheat emissions tests was openly discussed in the halls of VW since 2006. Read more…

DETROIT — Utility and luxury were both on display in full force in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show this week. So, too, were vehicles that dared to reshape and reimagine their brands.

Alongside the likes of the tech-savvy Mercedes-Benz E-Class and versatile Honda Ridgeline pickup, there were some companies keen to remake themselves in the Motor City with attention-grabbing concepts and a few daring production cars as well.

The system that will be pushed into the German automaker’s new cars over the next few years debuts inside the e-Golf Touch here at CES. The new screen features interactive tiles that can be configured in 10 different ways. And the personalized settings are saved in the cloud and easily accessed by other synced VW vehicles. LAS VEGAS — Down, but not out, Volkswagen has officially unveiled at International CES a car that signifies its new way forward. Diesel is done (I hope) and, in its place, VW will focus on electrification.

It’s called the BUDD-e and, as you can see, it’s both a nod to the German carmaker’s past as well as its future.

Ignore the looks or the 373-mile all-electric range. Perhaps the coolest thing VW has said about its new BUDD-e microbus EV concept is this: “BUDD-e is a mobile interface which connects the vehicle with the world around it.” Now if that doesn’t sound like the statement of a car brand ready to remake itself, I don’t know what does.
