LONDON — Bafta host Stephen Fry provoked outrage during the ceremony Sunday night after he described the winner of the Best Costume Design award, Jenny Beavan, as a “bag lady.”

Beavan was barely off the stage having accepted the accolade — dressed in jeans, a grey scarf and a leather jacket — when he made the quip.

It was her work on Mad Max: Fury Road that earned her a place among the winners of the night.

Fry’s comments didn’t go down too well.

Some, meanwhile, found it funny.

Fry jumped onto Twitter to defend the quip later in the evening. Read more…

LONDON — It’s always nice when supermarkets throw in extra items for free, but it’s less so when the items in question happen to be moving.

Or when they happen to be rats.

A family in Essex recently received a home delivery from Tesco that came with a hairy, less-than-welcome surprise, ITV reports. The wriggling stowaway was discovered by 19-year-old Beckie Richardson, who spotted the beast snuffling around beside the smarties when she lifted one of the shopping crates.

“My daughter was so traumatised by it that she had a panic attack and fell on the floor and rather than getting away from the rat, I had to look after her,” said mother Sue Richardson. Read more…

The only son of a notorious earl, missing since 1974 when a woman was found dead in his home, has been granted a death certificate in his father’s case.

The certificate was granted Wednesday by Britain’s High Court at the request of George Bingham. It means he can inherit his late father’s title.

The disappearance of Lord Richard Lucan, the Seventh Earl of Lucan, has continued to fascinate Britons and cause endless media speculation.

LONDON — In the days following David Bowie’s death, a beautiful mural of the late, great singer became the focal point for mourning fans. It attracted flowers, candles and messages as people sung songs and shared what he meant to them.

Street artist Jimmy C’s take on photographer Brian Duffy’s iconic photo for the Aladdin Sane cover looked down on fans who came to pay their respects, a fitting tribute to the beloved icon.

Now, several weeks later, another mural has popped up, but it’s not been met with quite the same reaction.

BBC Radio Sheffield drew the wider public’s attention to the new mural by local artist Trik9, and despite their enthusiastic tweet — “Looks brilliant doesn’t it?”— the verdict isn’t good. Read more…

The #MyVoiceMySchool initiative was a joint project between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which helps Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, education advocates Digital Explorer and Skype in the Classroom.
