Mercedes’ Sprinter Extreme van could be straight out of ‘Jurassic Park’

Well, that’s slightly out of character. Mercedes-Benz’s truck line, Sprinter, just revealed a new concept van at the Chicago Auto Show that looks more fitting in Jurassic Park than it does in a utility van showroom.

The mud-slathered thing is called Sprinter Extreme and it’s, well, very extreme indeed.

Built in partnership with automotive tuner company RENNtech, the Extreme stands over 9 feet tall and is 20 feet from end to end. It sits on bead-lock wheels (the wheels bolt onto the tires) inspired by the Mercedes G-Class. Proving it’s more than just a mean-looking van, it’s been fitted with a “Tipper Bed” for extra utility. Jaguar Land Rover announced Monday morning that it is putting five highly automated vehicles on U.K. roads this year to test both connectivity and self-driving tech.

Imagine, for example, if your car knew about a patch of black ice before it crossed it and warned you so you could avoid.

This project is part of a much bigger vision than just black ice warnings, however.

The JLR vehicles are joining the £5.5-million ($7.9 million) U.K. Connected Intelligent Transport Environment (UK-CITE) project that includes 100 vehicles and a 41-mile test corridor between Coventry and Solihull, England. The project will utilize newly installed vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) systems on public roads that will send information about traffic jams and road conditions before they can be seen. Self-driving cars are going to be the future of mobility. That is, for everyone but Porsche.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told German newspaper Westfalen-Blatt that the performance carmaker does not plan to develop an autonomous car, Reuters reports.

“One wants to drive a Porsche by oneself,” Westfalen-Blatt said. Adding, “an iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road.”

Despite not wanting to offer a self-driving car, Porsche is still investing in both plug-in hybrids and fully electric models. A plug-in hybrid 911 with an all-electric range of 31 miles will be on sale as soon as 2018, Blume told Westfalen-Blatt. Read more…

Since the dieselgate scandal broke in September, Volkswagen executives and representatives have appeared publicly shocked and genuinely dismayed with the revelation that the then-largest global automaker had cheated emissions regulations with over 11 million diesel-powered models worldwide. Turns out, however, it might have been an open secret all along.

According to Reuters, Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported that — according to documents from VW’s internal investigation — that software designed to cheat emissions tests was openly discussed in the halls of VW since 2006. Read more…

Seems Tesla is selling better in China than previously believed.

Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk told Engadget that the upstart EV automaker is “doing reasonably well” in mainland China. It’s doing so well in fact that Musk and his cohort aim to have a Chinese manufacturing site chosen by mid-2016.

Tesla is eager to avoid the lofty import duties levied against cars imported into the country. Avoiding those taxes — in addition to diminished shipping costs — would make Tesla cars more competitive in China. Read more…

Former Governor of California and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger might have popularized the Humvee for civilians, but dare I say there is no vehicle on the planet more “Schwarzenegger” than the Mercedes-Benz Unimog.

That’s because it’s essentially a study in Teutonic overload. I mean, look at the thing. Although this 1977 U1300 model only has two doors and for wheels, it is nearly 10 feet tall, weighs more than 9,700 pounds and boasts 17.5 inches of ground clearance. It’s practically screaming, “Come with me if you want to live!” Read more…

Recently, I wrote that the 2016 Mazda Miata was all about connecting with the road. But, if I’m honest, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is, too.

If the Miata is connecting with the road, it does so in a familial, gentle way, like how your grandmother envelopes you in a big, soft and warm hug. The way the 4C Spider connects you to the road is like how a brain surgeon’s drill connects with your skull — in a fast, loud and brutal way.

That isn’t to say it’s bad, though; it’s quite the opposite, really. However, where you’d just need to be a driving enthusiast to enjoy the Miata, you’ll need to be both a driving enthusiast and an insane person to enjoy the Alfa. Thankfully, I am both those things. Read more…

Nissan’s seven-seater Rogue crossover has a great all-wheel drive system. It can’t, say, climb a 45-degree snow-packed slope at speeds of 60 miles per hour. The Rogue Warrior can, however.

That’s because it’s been fitted with the Dominator track system from American Track Truck. Ignoring the 23 inches of ground clearance and treads that would make General Patton green with envy, Nissan brags the Rogue Warrior is otherwise stock. I don’t want to say that’s a leap, but that’s like saying the Oscar-Meier Wiener mobile is a stock Ram 1500 pickup, aside from the wiener. Read more…

DETROIT — Utility and luxury were both on display in full force in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show this week. So, too, were vehicles that dared to reshape and reimagine their brands.

Alongside the likes of the tech-savvy Mercedes-Benz E-Class and versatile Honda Ridgeline pickup, there were some companies keen to remake themselves in the Motor City with attention-grabbing concepts and a few daring production cars as well.

Given the fact that the automotive industry is on the threshold of a series of revolutions (Bill Ford Jr.‘s words — not ours), it feels like a bad time to feel the need to shake things up and redefine your brand. That said, coming from another angle, maybe it’s the perfect time. Either way, here were the cars that stood out to us as real game-changers for their makers. Read more…

The Lunar Quattro Rover: One Small Step for Audi, One Giant Leap for 3D Printing

By Tyler Koslow

When it comes to implementing 3D printing in the manufacturing of automotive vehicles, German automobile company Audi has demonstrating their own use of the technology on a regular basis. Late last year, Audi had announced that their future use of metal-based 3D printing is imminent, and had even produced a fully 3D printed functional replica of the 1936 Auto Union Type C Grand Prix racer. Now, Audi is taking these efforts from planet Earth into outer space, collaborating with and sponsoring the Berlin-based team from Part Time Scientist to create the 3D printed Audi Lunar Quattro moon rover.…
