Syrian refugee chefs recreate the taste of home in Turkey

ISTANBUL—The Salloura chain sweets shop was a Syrian institution, famous throughout the region for its fluffy cakes, pistachio baklava and rose-water syrup-soaked, fried dough balls.

Today the Salloura family manages the bakery out of a bustling avenue in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district, where traditional eateries have sprouted up in order to offer cheap, filling and nostalgia-inducing food for the more than 300,000 Syrian refugees who have made this city their home in exile.

“These foods help people to feel connected with their homeland, who in Turkey feel lost,” said Mohammad Ayman as he wraps clotted cream filled pastries into to-go packages for Syrian customers. Read more…

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has reported that diplomats meeting in Munich as part of the International Syria Support Group have agreed to work with Syrian parties to implement a “nationwide cessation of hostilities.”

Kerry said early Friday that the target is to implement the ceasefire in a week’s time.

Kerry says a long-term ceasefire in Syria depends on parties to its civil war engaging in “genuine negotiation,” adding that “the objective is to achieve a durable long-term ceasefire at some point in time.” He acknowledged that differences remain over the future of Syrian President Bashar Assad but said “you have to be at the table to deal with that.” Read more…

LONDON — Students in Syria have been discussing their education with their counterparts over in the UK on Skype, and both groups have learnt a great deal about their foreign peers.

Schoolchildren from Palestine School in the Syrian capital of Damascus and east London’s Oaklands School have taken part in a series of three “virtual classroom exchanges” across January that aimed to see both groups discuss ideas for the international response to education amid the global refugee crisis.

The #MyVoiceMySchool initiative was a joint project between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which helps Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, education advocates Digital Explorer and Skype in the Classroom. A 20-year-old Islamic State (ISIS) militant reportedly executed his mother in a public square in the ISIS-held city of Raqqa on Wednesday, according to local activists.

Citing sources in the city, activists from Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the woman was executed in front of hundreds of people in front of a post office in Raqqa after being accused of apostasyMashable is unable to independently verify this information
