Mumbai’s Deonar landfill fire is so massive that it can be seen from space

Since Jan. 27, the city of Mumbai has been blanketed by thick smog as a result of a continuous mystery fire at its largest landfill in Deonar. The fire is so big that it has even been captured from space by NASA‘s Landsat 8 satellite.

The NASA image shows plumes of smoke rising from the landfill and spreading to the surrounding densely populated areas. As the fires continued to rage, air quality levels plummeted to record low levels in the city, resulting in the closure of over 70 schools.
