Humans are not the only animals into video games, it turns out.

In a research project that began Monday, orangutans at Australia’s Melbourne Zoo are being entertained with interactive projections from an Xbox Kinect, a motion sensing device built for the gaming console. According to an emailed statement from Microsoft, which designed the device, the experiment is focused on how the creatures learn and interact with technology.

The project is a world first, say researchers from Zoos Victoria and the University of Melbourne’s Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural User Interfaces Read more…

Maybe we should stick with the hand-written ballots.

The website tracking the Republican caucus results in Iowa experienced intermittent outages on Monday, a stumble for what had been a highly touted new system from Microsoft on its Azure cloud computing platform.

The reason for the outage was not immediately clear. People that tried to access the site were met with a messages: “The service is unavailable.”

The new system had been lauded as a significant leap forward in technology for a process that is often done with paper ballots sorted by hand.  Read more…

Microsoft’s assistant Cortana keeps getting smarter.

Cortana can now send reminders for tasks based on the contents of your inbox, Microsoft announced Monday. The company also added new features that make it easier to organize calendar appointments.

The new reminders feature means that Cortana will be able to remind you to followup on tasks you said you would do in emails. It comes via a collaboration with Microsoft Research, Microsoft’s Gabe Aul explains on Microsoft’s Windows blog.

“People often make promises to do things in email but may forget about them as the days go by and emails pile up,” Aul writes. “Microsoft Research (MSR) was pursuing an intriguing and powerful idea around this challenge—automatically recognizing when people make commitments to one another in email messages and providing reminders.” Read more…

That’s all, folks: Starting Jan. 12, Microsoft no longer supports older versions of Internet Explorer, including IE 8, 9 and 10

More precisely, this means Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for these versions of its browser. You can still use them, but if a new security hole is discovered in IE — and it eventually will be — your browser will remain unpatched and your system will be in danger.

The company strongly urges users to switch to Internet Explorer 11, which offers “improved security, increased performance, better backward compatibility” and better web standards support than the older variants of IE. Alternatively, you can start using Microsoft Edge, the company’s new browser which will automatically launch Internet Explorer 11 when backwards compatibility is needed. Read more…

LAS VEGAS — Car companies allowing owners to remotely interact with their cars by way of a smartphone app is nothing new. Allowing drivers to talk to their cars and control them by voice command, like in the now-infamous 1980s TV show Knight Rider, is. Amazingly, that’s exactly what Volvo has done.

Volvo announced Tuesday morning at CES that Volvo owners will now be able to control their cars by voice through the Microsoft Band 2. Delightfully, they’ll be able to do more than flash the lights (they’ll be able to do that, too). With simple voice commands, owners can set the navigation, turn on the heater, lock the doors, or sound the horn. Read more…
