10 dead after explosion rocks Istanbul’s main tourist district

An explosion in the historic district of Sultanahmet, close to the Blue Mosque, in Istanbul, has left 10 dead and at least 15 others wounded, the governor’s office has confirmed.

The explosion, which took place near the obelisk of Theodosius was strong enough to be heard in nearby neighborhoods, according to CNN Turk. The location is popular with tourist, and many of the dead are foreigners, according to a statement from the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus.

Officials say the blast was caused by a suicide bomber. During a press briefing just hours after the attack, Kurtulmus said the man responsible had been identified as a 28-year-old Syrian. Read more…
