Jeb Bush wants to end the federal food stamp program
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush wants to get rid of the federal food stamp program as part of his overhaul of the country’s welfare system.
Bush’s plan, released Friday morning, would do away with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — or food stamps — as well as the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The programs would be replaced with federal “Right to Rise” grants for states, allowing them each to fund programs developed to address poverty.
Bush, a former Florida governor, outlined his plans for overhauling the welfare system ahead of a poverty forum in South Carolina on Saturday. He said that while the United States has spent “trillions of dollars on the ‘war on poverty'” more than 46 million Americans still live in poverty. Read more…
