Vatican newspaper slams ‘blasphemous’ new ‘Charlie Hebdo’ cover

The Vatican’s newspaper has hit out against this week’s Charlie Hebdo cover for portraying God as a blood-stained terrorist with a gun and the headline “The assassin is still at large.”

The Osservatore Romano said the artwork, on the front of a 32-page issue produced by artists and staffers of the satirical magazine a year after gunmen stormed the office killing nearly a dozen people, disrespected all faiths.

“Behind the deceptive flag of uncompromising secularism, the weekly is forgetting once more what religious leaders of every faith unceasingly repeat to reject violence in the name of religion – using God to justify hatred is a genuine blasphemy, as Pope Francis has said several times,” the Guardian reports the paper as saying. French restaurateurs have expressed consternation after a new law has made le doggy bag – long considered a dining faux pas in France – a legal requirement.

The new law came into force on New Year’s Day, and dining establishments serving more than 150 covers a day are now required to provide doggy bags or a take-away box if a customer asks for one.

It’s part of an initiative launched by the French government in 2013, with the aim of reducing food waste by 50% by 2025Seven million tonnes of food are thrown away each year in France, and the restaurant industry alone is responsible for one million tonnes of food waste. Read more…
