Airlines added more than 3,100 new routes in the past year
In 2015, 359 airlines launched 3,141 routes across 173 countries, according to airline analysis website anna.aero, which tracks flight service in its route database. That’s about 500 more than were added in 2014.
More than half of the routes — 1,760 — connected two airports that previously had no direct flight.
UK-based budget carriers Ryanair and easyJet lead the way with 99 new routes each, but the UK came in fifth by country. The United States took the top spot with 827 new routes, followed by Russia (381), China (378), Spain (330) and the UK (312). Read more…
