3D Printing Ceramics with the Sound of Some Solid Vibes

3D Printing Ceramics with the Sound of Some Solid Vibes

By Tyler Koslow

We’ve seen how 3D printing technology has been used to artistically represent the physical world, but only few, like Reify and artist Gilles Azzaro, have explored the ways that sound can also be manifested by 3D printing, too. But what if you were able to own your favorite song or album in the form of ceramic pottery? Well, two artists based in the Netherlands, spatial sound designer Ricky van Broekhoven and designer Olivier van Herpt, have teamed up to make this intriguing idea of evoking sound in 3D a reality.…

It’s part “walks into a bar” joke, part John le Carré spy novel. But this is the true story of the assassination of a Russian spy by two of his own.

The day was Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006. By all accounts it was a gorgeous autumn day in London

Airbus Subsidiary Opens Metal 3D Printing Facility

Airbus Subsidiary Opens Metal 3D Printing Facility

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Airbus subsidiary Premium AEROTEC has just reinforced its parent company’s commitment to 3D printing end parts, giving credence to the notion, posited by Airbus’s Peter Sander, that 2016 will see a big increase in 3D printing for industrial end products. The German aerospace manufacturer has just opened its first manufacturing facility for 3D printing titanium aircraft components, where it has begun serial production of metal 3D printed parts. Additionally, Premium AEROTEC is examining the use of Norsk Titanium‘s Rapid Plasma Deposition™ titanium parts for use in the production of the A350 XWB.…

Circuits from Space! ESA to Develop 3D Printing Breadboard Machine for the ISS

Circuits from Space! ESA to Develop 3D Printing Breadboard Machine for the ISS

By Tyler Koslow

3D printing has certainly impacted a lot of industries down here on Earth, but numerous projects show that the true potential of this maturing tech may be best suited for outer space. As of late, the European Space Agency has certainly recognized 3D printing as an important tool in the space race, having just awarded €500k to a team that developed a new cold spraying technology that enables metal to be 3D printed at room temperatures (helping to eliminate possible heat-based distortion and damage to metal components).…

The Lunar Quattro Rover: One Small Step for Audi, One Giant Leap for 3D Printing

By Tyler Koslow

When it comes to implementing 3D printing in the manufacturing of automotive vehicles, German automobile company Audi has demonstrating their own use of the technology on a regular basis. Late last year, Audi had announced that their future use of metal-based 3D printing is imminent, and had even produced a fully 3D printed functional replica of the 1936 Auto Union Type C Grand Prix racer. Now, Audi is taking these efforts from planet Earth into outer space, collaborating with and sponsoring the Berlin-based team from Part Time Scientist to create the 3D printed Audi Lunar Quattro moon rover.…

Making the World a Better Place at the 3Dörtgen 3D Print Shop in Istanbul

Making the World a Better Place at the 3Dörtgen 3D Print Shop in Istanbul

By Davide Sher

Update: I just heard about what happened and what is still happening in Istanbul as I’m writing. It feels even more terrible as I was visiting the same exact locations that were hit by the attacks just a couple of days ago. I am not a geopolitical journalist and I am not fully comfortable writing about issues that are much greater than my own sphere of professional interests. I feel terrible for the present and future innocent victims of these cowardly acts of terrorism that have no goal other than creating fear and thus turning people against each other. …

Davide Sher’s Top 2015 3D Printing Applications

By Davide Sher

I think that, until the end of 2014, it was still theoretically possible to discuss the top 5 3D printing innovations of the year. Today, I don’t find that possible any longer. There are just way too many things happening in the 3D printing industry and the crazy part is that we are still, really, at the very beginning. Only a couple of years have passed since the mass public discovered that 3D printing exists and, yet, this technology is now at the forefront in just about every industrial, professional, and artisan sector of manufacturing.…
