Autodesk & Mattel Release New $299 3D Printer for Families

Autodesk & Mattel Release New 9 3D Printer for Families

By Michael Molitch-Hou

In April of last year, Autodesk first announced its partnership with legendary toy manufacturer Mattel, saying that they would be powering the toy company’s design apps.  We are now seeing the biggest result of that partnership as Mattel reboots its classic ThingMaker product.  While in the 60s and 90s the ThingMaker was a desktop molding machine, the 21st century version is a desktop 3D printer.
Introduced in the 1960s and then resurrected in the 1990’s, the ThingMaker was a device that allowed kids to fabricate squishy toys, like bugs and flowers, by pouring liquid resin into metal molds, which were then baked within the device’s scalding hot oven. …

SexShop3D Gets Physical with 3D Printed “Pocket P*ssy” (NSFW)

By Davide Sher

Talking – and writing – about sex toys is always complicated and fun at the same time, because of the many word games and double meanings that inevitably pop up (exactly). In 3D printing, sex toys may be one of the products with the biggest unexpressed potential. SexShop3D is hoping this potential will begin to rise through its newest product: the Pocket Pussy, “a customizable male masturbator with the option to obtain a perfect replica through 3D scanning”.
The subject often comes up in informal discussions with people who are just finding out about 3D printing and, while the advantages are obvious (personalized production, no need to go to the physical sex shop or have the product shipped) the limits are just as clear: material and finish quality and low familiarity with 3D printers.…

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

By Davide Sher

The CARAPACE PROJECT brand is a way for MHOX design studio (Alessandro Zomparelli and Filippo Nassetti) to use their generative software and SLS 3D printing technology to explore new types of products. These range from immediately useful items, such as jewelry and iPhone cases (like the one I have), and conceptual products such as their masks and ear covers, imagined as a “carapax” or external skeleton that protects eyes and ears from over-stimulation.

Perhaps inspired by the many announcements and upcoming releases of VR headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, their latest project they combine both their practical and conceptual approaches by creating a VR mask that is both an exoskeletal shield and a hold for a VR headset.…

New 3Dprintler API Brings Competitive Spirit to the 3D Printing Marketplace

By Tyler Koslow

When searching for a flight, hotel, room, or car rental for an upcoming vacation, quite a few individuals use price comparison websites such as Expedia or Priceline in hopes of discovering the most lucrative deal across the travel market. And, as there are often an abundance of airlines and hotels to choose between, the same could be applied to 3D design marketplaces, which are constantly growing in both quantity and quality. From 3D marketplaces such as Thingiverse to 3D printing service providers like Shapeways, access to 3D content is becoming increasingly available and therefore more competitive.…

XYZprinting’s da Vinci Mini Honored with 2016 CES Editors’ Choice Award

XYZprinting’s da Vinci Mini Honored with 2016 CES Editors’ Choice Award

By Tyler Koslow

As CES 2016 Las Vegas comes to a close this weekend, it seems that few companies have had as much CES success as XYZprinting. The Taiwan-based company rolled out a number of new products at the popular consumer electronics trade show, including two consumer and three professional-grade 3D printers (expanding into inkjet, DLP, and full-color binder jet printing). Although XYZ printing unveiled a number of their high-grade printing machines at the Sands Expo Convention Center, it was their little guy who ended up getting all of the attention.…

Google & Lenovo Unveil Project Tango Smartphone at CES 2016

By Michael Molitch-Hou

If successful, Google’s Project Tango has the power to change just about everything. By putting a 3D camera into tablets and smartphones, ordinary consumers could, potentially, capture their daily world in 3D, sharing 3D selfies on dating sites and posting scans of their newborns on Facebook, all using a device that they would be carrying around anyway. And, after showing off a prototype of the Project Tango smartphone with Intel’s RealSense built-in, Google and Lenovo have teased that they will unveiling something big on Thursday.…

Nascent Objects Launches 1st 3D Printed Modular Product at CES 2016

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Nascent Objects is a really unique company.  When we wrote about them last July, it was hard for me to wrap my head around them as a company that offered rapid electronics manufacturing through a drag-and-drop module designer and circuitry 3D printing. The company has since continued to evolve, creating an entire modular marketplace already populated with consumer electronics.  On their site, you’ll see concepts for complete products, like a baby monitor and a garden sensor, but you’ll also see individual electronic components, like a camera, a motor, and GPS unit. …
