This article is part of DBA, a series on Mashable about running a business that features insights from leaders in entrepreneurship, venture capital and management.

It’s easy to get caught up in building the perfect solution. Many entrepreneurs want to be responsible for putting the newest, shiniest product out in the market. The trouble is, that’s not a sustainable model for building a business.

No matter how sophisticated your product may be, your audience isn’t going to buy it if it doesn’t solve a real problem.

So, before heading to the drawing board to sketch out your perfect solution, first focus on understanding the complexities of your problem, find customers dealing with that problem and then build the most viable solution for those customers. Read more…

Tesla buyers, be careful what you write about the company — if you’re deemed “rude,” you just might get banned from buying a Tesla car

That’s what happened to Californian venture capitalist Stewart Alsop, whose Tesla order got canceled — by company CEO Elon Musk, no less — after he wrote a blog post criticizing the company’s Model X launch event

In September 2015, Alsop wrote a blog post titled “Dear @ElonMusk: You should be ashamed of yourself,” asking Musk to apologize for making Tesla customers wait nearly two hours for the Model X event to start, and then making them wait even longer for a chance to test-drive the car they had pre-ordered Read more…

BANGKOK — A Scottish tourist has been gored to death by an elephant that he and his 16-year-old stepdaughter were riding on the resort island of Samui, Thai authorities said Tuesday.

Police Lt. Rotjanart Kiewjan said the animal threw Gareth Crowe and Eilidh Hughes to the ground during a trek on Monday. The elephant then gored Crowe with his tusk and stomped on him.

Thai news reports said the elephant became enraged after its trainer, known as a mahout, climbed off to take a picture of the tourists. Police think hot weather may have disturbed the 13-year-old elephant. Read more…

Your coworker received a phone call, her voice dropped from pleasant to distraught in seconds; there was a death in the family. She’s now back at the office after time off, typing at her keyboard. Do you leap to her side and cradle her in your bosom?

Summarize those moving posts by author and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who wrote, “I want to choose life” after her husband died? Keep it professional with a quick condolence on the way to the printer? Or play dumb and act as if nothing happened?

Grief at the workplace can be uncomfortable. Conversations with coworkers tend to revolve around work and deadlines with a sprinkling of bon mots and light musings; suddenly it’s time to acknowledge a colleague’s deeply personal grief Read more…

SunTrust will try to hush Super Bowl parties across America for 30 seconds with a message about financial stress.

It’s not quite as dreary as it sounds however; the 30-second spot, entitled “Hold your breath,” does compare money problems to drowning, but it also tries to strike a positive note with a reminder that you shouldn’t let them consume you

“It’s like you’re drowning,” the narrator says. “Meanwhile, the moments that matter slip away.”

The commercial is advertising SunTrust’s push to “restore financial confidence” called “Onward and Upward.” According to a survey by the bank, 40% of Americans and 60% of millennials do not have even $2,000 saved for an emergency. Read more…

Who knew flat-screen TVs could be made so dramatic?

Liam Neeson meets with a younger version of himself — played by the actor’s real-life son Micheál Neeson — to discuss the time-traveling transport of LG’s OLED television from the future in the electronics company’s first-ever Super Bowl ad

The plot, if there is one, is not easily untangled. But the threat of some unnamed nefarious force that apparently wants to halt the TV’s release makes the 60-second spot, which was produced by Ridley Scott, feel more like a trailer for a sci-fi thriller than a prosaic consumer electronics commercial. It ends with the younger Neeson inexplicably riding off on a motorcycle into a Tron-like maze. Read more…

Woman drops big ol’ f-bomb live on MSNBC during caucuses

At the Iowa caucuses, everyone is clamoring for attention — and one woman stole it all.

During a live MSNBC broadcast of the event, a concerned voter made it to live TV and began to air her concerns. She got a little heated, as people do, and decided to drop everyone’s favorite expletive.

“The fact that I haven’t gotten benefits in three months because the VA is so f*cked really makes me concerned,” the voter said.

It’s hard to tell what’s better — when she says f*ck, or when someone follows it up with a very audible “oooh.”

Technically, the FCC only prohibits obscenities on major broadcast networks such as ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. MSNBC, as a cable news station, would not be subject to these regulations and subsequent heavy fines Read more…
