Singapore Makes Plans to 3D Print Public Housing

Singapore Makes Plans to 3D Print Public Housing

By Michael Molitch-Hou

In a world of economic scarcity, public housing has become essential for sheltering our species’ most vulnerable populations. Interestingly, the island city-state of Sinagpore having a unique approach to public housing, with 80% of the resident population living in government buildings and, more than that, the small nation implemented some housing practices that the United States has sometimes been too afraid to tackle when it comes to public housing: socioeconomically integrated public developments. Now, Singapore is moving beyond these important strategies to novel methods of construction, namely 3D printing.…

Out-of-this-World & Practical Applications Shine at Inside 3D Printing Singapore

Out-of-this-World & Practical Applications Shine at Inside 3D Printing Singapore

By Phillip Keane

The Inside 3D Printing Expo has returned once again to Singapore for the 3rd year running, and was again hosted by the Suntec City Convention centre. Although somewhat scaled down in physical size since last year, there were still plenty of quality exhibitors showing off their wares to a 3D printing-hungry public.
Of personal interest was the HP booth, who had bought a variety of printed components for visitors to inspect and play around with. During last year’s expo, HP announced their entry into the 3DP game during a packed seminar, and showed a whole bunch of videos and apparently promised the Moon in terms of their ambition and capability.…

Carima’s Ultra-Fast 3D Printing to See Release This Year

Carima’s Ultra-Fast 3D Printing to See Release This Year

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Korean 3D printer manufacturer Carima was a big highlight of the Euromold show in Dusseldorf last year, with attendees huddling around their booth to see the company’s ultra-fast C-CAT 3D printing technology.  Like Carbon3D’s CLIP process, C-CAT is a continuous DLP technology that can produce objects with great speed and with little noticeable layering.  Unlike Carbon3D, Carima has stated that their technology is ready to hit the market.

At the 3D Printing Expo in Japan last week, the company not only showed off their C-CAT process once more, but also announced that it would be available for purchase within the year.…

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Pro-independence party candidate Tsai Ing-wen claimed victory in Taiwan’s presidential election late Saturday to become the island’s first female head of state.

The election took place amid concerns that Taiwan’s economy is under threat from China and broad opposition to Beijing’s demands for political unification.

Tsai said the election outcome was a further show of how ingrained democracy has become on the self-governing island. The results showed that Taiwanese people wish for a government “steadfast in protecting this nation’s sovereignty,” she said at her campaign headquarters. Read more…

MecklerMedia may not have made it through the 3D printing hype bubble, but parts of it have survived through 3DR Holdings, LLC and Rising Media, Inc.  Just before the New Year, it was announced that Rising Media, previously responsible for Inside 3D Printing Dusseldorf, had picked up Inside 3D Printing and RoboUniverse in the US.  Now, the event company, along with 3DPrint.com owner 3DR Holdings, have purchased the remainder of the international events as equal partners and will run all of the upcoming shows. …

In the wake of a series of deadly explosions in Jakarta Thursday morning local time, Indonesians are sharing a message of defiance on social media.

Condemned as an “act of terror” by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the violence in the capital city’s central shopping and business district has reportedly left at least four people dead. The attackers have not yet been identified, but Indonesia has previously been the victim of bombings undertaken by Islamic militant groups.

Rather than be cowed, as the area affected went into lockdown, locals and supporters from around the world used social media to tell the perpetrators their attempts to sow fear would not be successful Read more…

Yobi3D Makes Googling 3D Models Even Better

Yobi3D Makes Googling 3D Models Even Better

By Michael Molitch-Hou

It was more than a year ago that I wrote about Yobi3D, a site striving to be the Google of 3D printable content.  By typing in a search term, you could browse the web for 3D models to suit your needs, uniting the plethora of 3D printable sites located throughout the online universe into one platform. While I was in Taiwan, this past December, I got to meet the founder of Yobi3D, Jessy Lee, who told me that the site is still going strong and, since we covered them in 2014, they’ve added some interesting, new features.…

Making the World a Better Place at the 3Dörtgen 3D Print Shop in Istanbul

Making the World a Better Place at the 3Dörtgen 3D Print Shop in Istanbul

By Davide Sher

Update: I just heard about what happened and what is still happening in Istanbul as I’m writing. It feels even more terrible as I was visiting the same exact locations that were hit by the attacks just a couple of days ago. I am not a geopolitical journalist and I am not fully comfortable writing about issues that are much greater than my own sphere of professional interests. I feel terrible for the present and future innocent victims of these cowardly acts of terrorism that have no goal other than creating fear and thus turning people against each other. …
