Nintendo Classic ‘Duck Hunt’ Rebooted in VR

Nintendo Classic ‘Duck Hunt’ Rebooted in VR

By Tyler Koslow

One of the most iconic and popular video games of all time, Nintendo’s 1984 NES title Duck Hunt, might be a bit outdated, but who is to say that the classics can’t be reborn with a little help from emerging 3D technology? After attending this year’s Global Game Jam event, one 21-year-old developer from New Jersey named Joesph Delgado became inspired to take Duck Hunt, now over 30-years-old by the way, and reformat it for Virtual Reality.

I’m sure there were a lot of elements of both VR and Duck Hunt for Delgado to consider, implementing the classic Nintendo gun controller, tracking hand motions and ducks, and just making the VR experience as enjoyable as possible, for instance.…

VECTARY Creates 3D Design Platform for All Users

VECTARY Creates 3D Design Platform for All Users

By James Lefebvre

3D printing is widely marketed as allowing people to bring their ideas to life. However, 3D printing is only useful if that person can create a 3D model that accurately replicates their idea. This is where frustration can set in. Traditional CAD programs aren’t very user friendly, require a powerful computer, and are quite costly. VECTARY, a startup out of Slovakia, is looking to change the way we think about 3D modeling by creating an interface that allows anyone to design detailed models.…

Adobe Fuse Makes 3D Modeling Complex Characters Simple

Adobe Fuse Makes 3D Modeling Complex Characters Simple

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Adobe has slowly been plugging away at the 3D front to make their brand of easy and powerful tools extend their reach into 3D modeling and 3D printing.  This has previously included small additions to Photoshop CC for prepping 3D models for 3D printing, either through 3D printing service bureaus or local 3D printers.  Last year, however, the company really made big moves into the space through the acquisition of 3D software specialists Mixamo.  And, now, through Adobe Fuse, anyone with computer and internet access can create their own 3D characters for 3D animation. …

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

By Davide Sher

The CARAPACE PROJECT brand is a way for MHOX design studio (Alessandro Zomparelli and Filippo Nassetti) to use their generative software and SLS 3D printing technology to explore new types of products. These range from immediately useful items, such as jewelry and iPhone cases (like the one I have), and conceptual products such as their masks and ear covers, imagined as a “carapax” or external skeleton that protects eyes and ears from over-stimulation.

Perhaps inspired by the many announcements and upcoming releases of VR headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, their latest project they combine both their practical and conceptual approaches by creating a VR mask that is both an exoskeletal shield and a hold for a VR headset.…

Yobi3D Makes Googling 3D Models Even Better

Yobi3D Makes Googling 3D Models Even Better

By Michael Molitch-Hou

It was more than a year ago that I wrote about Yobi3D, a site striving to be the Google of 3D printable content.  By typing in a search term, you could browse the web for 3D models to suit your needs, uniting the plethora of 3D printable sites located throughout the online universe into one platform. While I was in Taiwan, this past December, I got to meet the founder of Yobi3D, Jessy Lee, who told me that the site is still going strong and, since we covered them in 2014, they’ve added some interesting, new features.…

New 3Dprintler API Brings Competitive Spirit to the 3D Printing Marketplace

New 3Dprintler API Brings Competitive Spirit to the 3D Printing Marketplace

By Tyler Koslow

When searching for a flight, hotel, room, or car rental for an upcoming vacation, quite a few individuals use price comparison websites such as Expedia or Priceline in hopes of discovering the most lucrative deal across the travel market. And, as there are often an abundance of airlines and hotels to choose between, the same could be applied to 3D design marketplaces, which are constantly growing in both quantity and quality. From 3D marketplaces such as Thingiverse to 3D printing service providers like Shapeways, access to 3D content is becoming increasingly available and therefore more competitive.…

Designer Creates a Fully 3D Printed, Functioning Tourbillon “Pocket Watch”

Designer Creates a Fully 3D Printed, Functioning Tourbillon “Pocket Watch”

By Davide Sher

It may not become a commercial product anytime soon, but the Tourbillon clock created by German designer Cristoph Laimer is certainly a prime example of what low-cost FFF 3D printing technology can achieve in terms of mechanical devices. In fact, it has already risen to Thingiverse celebrity status, with the complete 3D model – with accurate video instructions for assembly – featured on the 3D model network’s homepage.
A “Tourbillon” is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement developed around 1795 and patented by the French-Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet to counter the effects of gravity.…

Ultrahaptics Adds Tactile Sensations to Virtual 3D

Ultrahaptics Adds Tactile Sensations to Virtual 3D

By Davide Sher

Oculus’ Rift will let you wander through amazing, immersive, virtual 3D worlds. Google’s Project Tango will help you create a virtual 3D version of your real world. Their limit? Neither of them will ever give you any indication as to the material qualities of the digital objects you interact with. This is where Ultrahaptics comes in, with its Tactile Sensation Haptic Kit.
By the way, in case you were wondering, but never looked it up, “haptic” means any form of communication involving touch.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: 500K 3D Models

Free 3D Printable of the Week: 500K 3D Models

By Michael Molitch-Hou

From my interview with CEO Alban Denoyel, I learned that 3D model sharing site Sketchfab is really forward thinking, with the goal of reaching every relevant platform possible for embedding the 3D models uploaded to their site. The latest platform example is Volupedia, a mirror site of Wikipedia that Sketchfab has been using to show off how useful 3D models might be when researching topics on the open encyclopedia.

Since the beginning, Sketchfab has understood what the future of 3D will look like when everyone has access to 3D technologies.…

New Balance Partners with Intel, Starts New Digital Technology Division

New Balance Partners with Intel, Starts New Digital Technology Division

By Tyler Koslow

When it comes to recent trends within the fashion industry, no one field has been as heavily invested in 3D printing as footwear has. From major companies crafting their newest shoes with 3D printed midsoles to orthotic-driven startups such as Wiivv Wearables and SOLS providing custom-designed and printed insoles, the influence of 3D printing has been spreading across footwear design and manufacturing for quite some time now. The sportswear company New Balance is certainly no stranger to this influence, having announced last November that 3D printed midsoles will be implemented into the design of their newest running shoe.…
