3D Medical Animation — Changing Patient Education

3D Medical Animation — Changing Patient Education

By Nic Widerhold

The urge to depict, and thus to better understand the body, has always been with us. From the caves at Lascaux in France to Leonardo da Vinci’s folios to the medical illustrations of anatomist Andreas Vesalius — the history of medicine has always included the urge to portray the human body and its many mysteries.
Early Origins
Even at a time when it was frowned upon, dedicated early “explorers” of the human body, such as da Vinci, delved into the tangled intricacies of human anatomy and physiology through careful autopsy and subsequent renderings of the findings.…

SexShop3D Gets Physical with 3D Printed “Pocket P*ssy” (NSFW)

By Davide Sher

Talking – and writing – about sex toys is always complicated and fun at the same time, because of the many word games and double meanings that inevitably pop up (exactly). In 3D printing, sex toys may be one of the products with the biggest unexpressed potential. SexShop3D is hoping this potential will begin to rise through its newest product: the Pocket Pussy, “a customizable male masturbator with the option to obtain a perfect replica through 3D scanning”.
The subject often comes up in informal discussions with people who are just finding out about 3D printing and, while the advantages are obvious (personalized production, no need to go to the physical sex shop or have the product shipped) the limits are just as clear: material and finish quality and low familiarity with 3D printers.…

By James Lefebvre

The rebels are in luck! The full plans for an AT-AT have been uploaded to MyMiniFactory. With knowledge of the inner workings, they’ll be able to take down Imperial forces like never before… or just have a lot of fun 3D printing and building a model of one.

Kirby Downey spent a week to design this representation of the famed All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT), and spared no detail. The model features 15 points of articulation, and consists of 70 individual parts.…

New Global Filament Directory Helps You Navigate the 3D Printing Jungle

By Davide Sher

Even though we know full well – thanks to one of the most stable charts in 3D Hubs’ monthly trend updates – that at least 50% of all desktop FFF 3D printing is done either in black ABS (for technical parts, where color does not matter) or white (if you are going to apply a finish to a decorative piece), leaving a large percentage of very fragmented user preferences. As the awareness of the potential for new materials becomes clearer, those other users are seeking different materials to test out and work with.…

Threeding Brings Greek Artifacts Back from Antiquity for 3D Printing

Threeding Brings Greek Artifacts Back from Antiquity for 3D Printing

By Michael Molitch-Hou

After partnering with Artec 3D in 2014, Threeding.com has used the company’s 3D scanning technology to digital capture hundreds of Ancient Greek artifacts, which are now all available on their 3D printing marketplace. Located on the Threeding.com website, customers can find just about anything they’d wish to print from Greek antiquity, from the head of Zeus to the head of Hygeia and more.

To create the hundreds of printable artifacts, artist Krasimir Todorov, of ZN ART, worked with the Threeding team to scan and restore objects with Artec’s Spider and Eva scanners, as well the Artec Studio software.…

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

MHOX Envisions Symbiotic VR with 3D Printed VR-mask

By Davide Sher

The CARAPACE PROJECT brand is a way for MHOX design studio (Alessandro Zomparelli and Filippo Nassetti) to use their generative software and SLS 3D printing technology to explore new types of products. These range from immediately useful items, such as jewelry and iPhone cases (like the one I have), and conceptual products such as their masks and ear covers, imagined as a “carapax” or external skeleton that protects eyes and ears from over-stimulation.

Perhaps inspired by the many announcements and upcoming releases of VR headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, their latest project they combine both their practical and conceptual approaches by creating a VR mask that is both an exoskeletal shield and a hold for a VR headset.…
